The US DoD requires cylindrical and spherical pressure resistant vessels for various applications. In some applications, these vessels need to be able to resist significant externally applied hydrostatic pressure loads without implosion.

To obtain data on implosions under laboratory and at-sea conditions, metallic and composite pressure vessels were designed, constructed, and evaluated.  An open ocean implosion test was carried out, and the resulting shock waves and pressure vessel remains were analyzed.
